Nomura Hōzan was born 1957 in Mie Prefecture. A composer and shakuhachi performer, he is a the current Living National Treasure representing the Tozan-ryū. His wife is koto performer Nomura Yuko . His eldest son is shakuhachi performer Nomura Mikito. As of 2015, he is a part-time lecturer at the Japanese Music Department of Tokyo University of the Arts and Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music, as well as a Dai-Shihan (grand master) of the Tozan school of shakuhachi, deputy dojocho, examiner, member of the Japan Sankyoku Association, member of the Federation of Contemporary Japanese Music Composers, member of the Yamamoto Hōzan Shakuhachi Ensemble, member of the Aichi Arts and Culture Association, and leader of the Tozan-kai. He also provides acting guidance for NHK TV dramas. He learned shakuhachi from his father and later studied under the Living National Treasure Yamamoto Hōzan I. He won the gold medal at the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Honkyoku Competition National Tournament while still in high school. He graduated from the NHK Japanese Music Skills Development Association. He has held shakuhachi recitals and the Tozan-kai "Bamboo Echoes" concert. He has been active both in Japan and abroad, performing on NHK TV and FM broadcasts, and performing with an orchestra in the famous piece "November Steps." He has received numerous awards, including the 1994 Agency for Cultural Affairs Arts Festival Award, the 2014 Arts Festival Recording Division Excellence Award, the Aichi Prefectural Arts and Culture Encouragement Cultural Award, the Nagoya Citizens' Arts Festival Jury Special Award, and the Tozan Award.
