Shakuhachi
A native of Tokuyama-chō, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Nakago Gyokuzan’s family was formerly samurai of the Chōshū clan, then, seven generations later, his family became engaged in the clothing trade. He was born Nakako Isamu on April 9, 1886. After graduating from Tokuyama Junior High School in 1904, he began working in the family business. As a child, he had fallen under the spell of the shakuhachi and, in February of 1920, he began his first training under the tutelage of Tozan-ryū master Okamoto Yōzan in Hiroshima. In October of 1924, he moved to Tokyo and switched to the tutelage of Katayama Yūzan. By December he had completed his Chuden studies. By May of 1927, he had completed the Okuden repertoire and became a student of Sōke (headmaster) Nakao Tozan. By September he had earned his Jun-Shihan (associate instructor) license and had been given the name Gyokuzan. In spite of a busy career as purveyor to the Imperial Household Ministry, he set up a shakuhachi teaching studio in Asakusa and was soon ranked among the top representatives of the Tozan-ryū in Tokyo.
