Kawase Roshū

She was born in Kurume City, Japan, and studied under Mihara Youka, a Kyushu-style jiuta koto player, in 1974.
In 1982, she became an apprentice of Kawase Hakushū, the head of the Ikuta Koto Hakushū-kai, and studied koto, sangen, kokyu, and kabuki music.
In 1987, she was given the name Kobayashi Roshū, and in 2009, she became the adopted daughter of Kawase Hakushū and took the name Kawase Roshū.
In addition to her sankyoku activities, she also performs with Kabuki ensemble on koto, shamisen, and kokyu.
She is currently studying Kyushu-style jiuta under Hirokazu Fujii, and received the 20th Japan Foundation for the Promotion of Traditional Culture Award in 2016.
She is a member of the board of directors of the Japan Sankyoku Association, the Ikuta School Association, and the Ikuta School Koto Hakushūkai.
