Shakuhachi
Born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1909, Moritomo Wafū, (birth name Masaki), began playing shakuhachi around his fifth year of elementary school. A few years later he became the youngest student of Nakamura Kikufū and earned his Kinko-ryū shihan (masters license) in 1927. After the second World War, he returned to shakuhachi, devoting himself to a deeper study of his teacher's style. Upon Nakamura's passing, he began to study with Kudō Kazan. Moritomo received his shihan in the Meian repertoire in 1955. He was a member of the Kifū-kai, the Kyūshū Shakuhachi Honkyoku-kai, the Fukuoka Sankyoku-kai, and the Chikuryū-kai. His career in shakuhachi spanned more that 50 years.
